Tomas Lindberg of At The Gates Reveals Cancer Battle and Announces New Album Amid Uncertain Future

Tomas Lindberg Redant, the unmistakable voice of At The Gates and one of melodic death metal’s most enduring figures, has revealed that he has been fighting Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of oral cancer, since late 2023. The diagnosis led to major surgery that removed a significant portion of his palate, followed by two months of intensive radiation treatment. In early 2025, scans revealed that traces of the cancer remained in areas inaccessible to surgery or radiation, forcing his medical team to consider chemotherapy as the next step.

In May 2025, Lindberg’s condition took a turn for the worse, resulting in his hospitalization and transfer to a specialized care unit. The band has spoken openly about the seriousness of his situation, acknowledging that recovery will be a long and uncertain process, and asking for privacy and respect for Lindberg and his family during this critical time.

Against this backdrop, At The Gates made an announcement that underscores both Lindberg’s resilience and his commitment to the music that has defined his life. The vocalist recorded all of his parts for the band’s upcoming album just one day before undergoing the surgery that could have altered his voice forever. Much of it was captured in single takes, with the urgency and awareness that it might be his final opportunity to perform in such a way. This new record will be the first full-length in over a decade to reunite Lindberg with guitarist Anders Björler alongside Jonas Björler, a combination that signals a return to the intricate and emotionally charged sound that cemented the band’s legacy in the 1990s.

In their statement, the band admitted that the uncertainty surrounding Lindberg’s future has added new meaning to the release. “Now, when the future feels more uncertain than ever, it feels right to release this album. It’s our way of giving something back to those who have stood by us through everything.” The title and release date remain under wraps, but the weight of the moment is already felt. This is more than just another record in the At The Gates discography, it is a testament to Lindberg’s refusal to let illness dictate his final verse, a defiant act of creation in the face of silence, and a reminder of why his voice has mattered to generations of extreme metal fans.
